COASTAL CALM
*Amanwella’s Plunge-Pool Privacy on Sri Lanka’s Sunlit Shore

Amanwella ́s setting is a scenic country standout arranged on a hillside above a pristine curved bay shared with fishermen and their jewel-hued boats.

This contemporary all-suite complex touts 30 spacious, calming, and uncluttered villas that are constructed from timber, stone, and local clay tiles. To the west, wild palm trees sway in the wind above a sandy grove backed by thick tumbling vegetation while to the east, great boulders seal the shoreline. Sri Lanka ́s Buddhist temples and impossibly green tea plantations make this island one seriously photogenic place that acts as a melting pot for landscapes, cultures, animals, and activities. Whether you ́re up for the scenic railway travels, wildlife safaris, hiking different world-heritage destinations, or simply traveling the island for leisure, Sri Lanka fulfills every traveler ́s desire.

The Amanwella luxury resort is situated on Sri Lanka ́s sun-baked south coast on the sleepy fishing town of Tangalle and is the perfect hideaway and home base to explore all that Sri Lanka has to offer. The resort is fabulous with the little touches: large tropical fruit bowls, pretty frangipani blooms, delicious and freshly baked coconut cookies, high quality publications that showcase all the destinations AMAN serves, and gifts for their guests to make their stay meaningful.

King-size beds belong in airy rooms with high wooden ceilings while floor-to-ceiling sliding glass windows and tropical-inspired sliding wooden doors on either side let the sunshine and the sound of the waves pour in the interior. Details unique to the resort include quasi-modern massive living rooms with dark kithul wood furnishings and a taupe colour scheme. There is no television in any of the suites, instead there is an undiluted view on the 800-metre beachfront and coconut grove to enjoy from the terrace while being serenaded by the sounds of peacocks as the refreshing breeze brushes your skin. The bathroom is a vast space with a large free-standing tub, a separate tropical shower, and thanks to the sliding doors, it even provides direct access to the pool for spontaneous dips that comes with a day bed for afternoon naps.

Amanwella has embraced a stripped back aesthetic that lets the idyllic surroundings take centre stage. A perfect place for meditation, morning yoga lessons, or a daily cup of black tea are what Sri Lanka is famous for. Inspired by the celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the resort flows effortlessly within its environment, keeping their guests’ experience as original and authentic as possible. Also, the properties blend seamlessly with the surroundings to maintain balance and harmony. The hue of the exterior walls perfectly matches the sand encompassing the resort and the simplicity of its streamlined design all transition harmoniously within the open airy spaces. Kerry Hill found inspiration in sharp angles and almost-monumental proportions from past century architecture. The lines of design exude very strong modernist influences.

The main restaurant is a simple pavilion-style linear building, located just above the resorts ́ 47-metre-long infinity pool and adjacent to the bar with outdoor seating and sweeping views. It basks in heavenly sunset panoramas during dinner time and proffers an international fusion menu that combines fine dining and focuses on Mediterranean and Asian cuisine with plenty of traditional Sri Lankan dishes like egg hoppers or curries. The sheets of glass on the facade of the bar next to the restaurant reflect the tropical sky and strong sun on the outside and ensure a great view from the inside.

The resort allows its guests to unplug and try out Ayurveda experiences, relax on sun loungers on the outdoor banquette, and dine privately on the al-fresco culinary treatments. Its pace is seductively slow and invites everyone who is searching for comfortable and peaceful moments to observe the waves of the turquoise Indian Ocean. The Amanwella is an unadulterated island-paradise bliss.

SCULPTURED BY THE SEA
*The Architectural Boldness of Barceló Fortina Malta

written Alban E. Smajli

Sliema’s seafront fractures, disrupted by a form that demands attention. Glass, steel, precision—Barceló Fortina Malta emerges. A construction of 183 rooms and 60 apartments, each framing the horizon.

Valletta stands across the water, a city cast in stone and shadow, its history mirrored in the structure’s facade. The interplay between past and present is neither forced nor contrived; it simply is. A hotel that absorbs light, motion, the whisper of waves. An address that commands its own presence within the city’s fabric, sculpted with intention and clarity.

The architecture is deliberate, calculated. Lines extend beyond function; they dictate experience. Each Superior and Deluxe room spills into a terrace, dissolving the line between personal and infinite. Water and air press into the senses, carrying the rhythm of the Mediterranean into the private domain. The suites unfold in fluidity—space becoming sensation, holding time in suspension. The spa hums in quietude, its atmosphere a measured contrast to the energy of the city beyond. The pool stretches outward, its reflective surface an echo of the open sea. The lounge carries the weight of conversations that stretch into dusk, where glasses catch and fracture the glow of candlelight.

Surfaces hold an unspoken language. Textures shift under touch, smooth to raw, soft to structured. The materiality of the space insists on presence, guiding the gaze without demand. Light and shadow choreograph an interplay across walls and surfaces, shifting the perception of depth, of distance, of stillness.

Barceló Fortina Malta is an articulation of the Barceló philosophy—spaces sculpted with an awareness of movement, of stillness, of how form meets function. Furniture is not ornamental, nor an afterthought; each piece belongs where it stands, deliberate and weighted with purpose. Wood and metal interplay in their truest states, textured and raw. Glass panels fragment the landscape, reflecting it back in shifting planes. A restrained palette—earth tones deepened by maritime blues—exists as an extension of land and sea.

LE MILE Magazine Barcelo Fortina Malta Hotel Room Review

LE MILE Magazine Barcelo Fortina Malta Hotel Room with View

The spatial flow is intuitive, each area composed with a sensitivity to balance. Private terraces extend outward, neither enclosed nor exposed, suspended between interior and horizon. The design resists excess, speaking instead through proportion, through silence, through negative space that heightens perception. The Barceló aesthetic thrives in this restraint, allowing atmosphere to shape the encounter.

Valletta remains as it was first conceived, a city of fortified geometry, a structure engineered to endure. St. John’s Co-Cathedral, its marble expanses heavy with Caravaggio’s tension, surrounds and consumes those who enter.

Mdina, the silent city, slows breath, its limestone corridors absorbing the day’s heat before exhaling it into the night. The Parliament House, a deliberate intervention by Renzo Piano, etches a precise language into an urban landscape layered with history. Prehistoric temples punctuate the land—stone against sky, presence against time. They persist beyond memory, carrying an imprint of a past that does not fade.

The island moves at its own rhythm. Roads coil and tighten, dense with motion, while movement flows beyond speed. Walking shapes the experience, revealing the island’s layers with each step. The ferry threads its course across the harbor, linking moments, binding histories. The city expands through detours, unplanned turns, and the spaces between destinations. Transport exists—Uber, Bolt, taxis weaving through narrow streets—but they remain peripheral to experience. Malta operates at its own pace. The ones who move too quickly miss the conversation between place and time, the subtle shifts that define presence.

Barceló Fortina Malta stands with presence, holding space with intention. Its design moves with the rhythm of the sea, its surfaces catching and refracting light, allowing time to settle within its architecture. A destination, a structure, an immersion into experience. Every element shapes an encounter, a moment that unfolds, fully realized.

Forsthofgut / A Magical Family Retreat

reviewed & written Qamile Krasniqi

This winter, we discovered the enchanting Naturhotel Forsthofgut, a gem at the foot of the Leoganger Steinberge. Renowned for blending modern design with the warmth of nature, this family-run hotel is a sanctuary where architecture meets the tranquility of the natural world.

At Forsthofgut, every detail is a testament to the beauty of sustainable architecture. The Schmuck family's commitment to eco-friendly materials and construction methods is evident throughout the hotel.

The integration of modern design with natural elements creates an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and inviting, making it a haven for relaxation and peace.

The waldSPA's design incorporates natural materials from the hotel's own forests, such as wood, stone, and glass, creating a serene ambiance. The panoramic windows in the spa area frame the stunning mountain views and the sprawling garden, inviting the outside in. For families, the waldSPA Family & Kids is a dream. The 800-square-meter addition includes a dedicated children's water world, offering wellness and fun for all ages.

Wood, as a primary element in Forsthofgut's interior design, brings a sense of harmony and warmth to the spaces. The tasteful furniture design, combining rustic charm with modern elegance, creates a cozy yet contemporary atmosphere. The use of wood in the architecture and furnishings not only reflects the hotel's commitment to sustainability but also enhances the feeling of being close to nature.

The ForsthofgutKÜCHE showcases a culinary journey that is as diverse as it is sustainable. The hotel’s dining options, including the delectable offerings of the Japanese restaurant Mizūmi, emphasize local and organic ingredients, offering a blend of traditional and modern flavors.

Our experience was marked by warmth and impeccable service from the moment we arrived. The rooms were spacious, showcasing a timeless modern design with a focus on high-quality woodwork and craftsmanship. The dining experience was varied, featuring excellent quality, and our reserved table added a personal touch. The staff's politeness and helpfulness stood out, and the dedicated playrooms for children, along with relaxing spaces for adults, made our stay both enjoyable and relaxing. The lobby, with its inviting nooks and stunning views, was a highlight of our stay.

Hotel de Rome / Berlin

As the Berlin morning fog dissipates, revealing the iconic Bebelplatz in all its historic grandeur, there lies a gem amongst its cobblestones: Hotel de Rome.

It isn’t just another luxury hotel; it's where time-traveling is no longer confined to the realms of fantasy. Here, the haunting whispers of the 19th century Dresden Bank merge effortlessly with the vivacious vibes of modern Berlin.

Last weekend, my family and I, including two spirited youngsters, decided to let Hotel de Rome be our urban sanctuary. Spoiler alert: It was a poetic blend of the past meeting the present, much like a techno beat playing in a vintage vinyl shop.

The façade, stoic and regal, belies the kaleidoscope of experiences that awaits within. Those Atelier Prométhée magenta urns standing sentry at the entrance aren’t just decorative pieces; they are the vanguards of taste and sophistication. As we stepped in, our senses were greeted by the almost ethereal glow of Olivia Steele’s neon birdcage, encapsulating the soul of the city—a delicate balance between confinement and freedom.

Having two kids, we are always on a quest for immersive experiences. And with Hotel de Rome's proximity to Berlin's wonders, our days were packed. Sightseeing was the main course, with the Zoo being the cherry on top. Ah, to see the delight in our children’s eyes as they encountered exotic creatures, just moments away from our hotel abode!

Nightfall at the hotel is nothing short of cinematic. The Rooftop Terrace is where we, the modern flâneurs, found solace. As the Berlin skyline erupted in a ballet of lights, we toasted to life, sipping meticulously crafted cocktails, each sip echoing the city's multifaceted tales.

As the day surrendered to night, our suite beckoned. A symphony of heritage design and contemporary luxury awaited us. The king-sized bed, more a cloud than a piece of furniture, cradled our weary bodies. There's a unique comfort in knowing that while the world outside continues its relentless pace, within these walls, time stands still, even if just for a night.

Hotel de Rome? Picture it as a fusion of old-school tales with the now.

For families like ours, craving genuine vibes amid the city's whirl, this place is next level. It's Berlin's avant-garde ode, where every brick carries an epic and every narrative pulses with unfiltered energy.

Niyama Private Islands / Maldives

During a scenic 45-minute seaplane transfer from Malé to the Dhaalu Atoll, we enjoyed a breathtaking aerial view of the turquoise Indian Ocean with hundreds of sandbars and green islands.

Niyama Private Islands is spread out over two isles - “Play” and “Chill” - and filled with thousands of different-sized coconut palm trees that rustle in the wind. The first thing that strikes one upon arrival is the infinite peace that makes you feel as if you were in your very own tropical paradise.

Spacious and elegant high wooden ceiling villas are built over the water or come with direct beach access. The Beach Pool Villas are our top pick and come equipped with enormous beds. A pool in the suite ́s private garden is perfect for a dip at midnight and there is a tropical outdoor rain shower and huge ceramic bathtub to bathe under the starry sky. On the outdoor deck, you can enjoy the view of endless blues and heavenly sunsets. The islands are eco-friendly and provide their guests with bicycles to bike to places like SURF SHACK for some Sundowners before enjoying the breezy ride back to their villas.

It ́s still a mystery to us how you can have the highest standard of privacy and peace even though there are 134 studios on the two islands. You rarely see other guests cycling through the labyrinths full of coconut trees, ferns and other tropical plants or on the epic wooden bridge that connects the Play and Chill. However, Niyama can be as peaceful and quiet or as busy and active as each guest desires. No matter if you are looking for adventure, relaxation, romance, surfing, or exclusive dining, Niyama offers tropical-island chic at its finest. It has something for everyone: speed boating to find spinner dolphins and flying fishes, one-on-one surfing lessons and scuba diving to spot turtles and reef sharks, and hopping on a boat bus that brings you to SUBSIX, a restaurant six metres below the water. The restaurant turned nightclub comes highly recommended for its top-notch local lobster set menu with champagne while dining in the company of stingrays, snappers, and sharks that pass by your table. And for those who are looking to get a gym session in, check out PUMP or ACTIVE where you can play pool, air-tennis, regular tennis, or badminton. It’s safe to say that there is plenty to do here!

The setting boasts an impressive number of culinary attractions to dine. There ́s the Maldives-only Afro-Latin restaurant named TRIBAL that combines fine dining with cuisines from Africa, Central, and South America. Then the atmospheric three-top Asian restaurant, NEST, is six metres above ground amongst Banyan trees and showcases a fantastic teppanyaki-style experience to the tune of tropical birds. On the ground, there ́s a garden that bears extra hot Maldivian chillies, fresh coriander, watermelon, and salads. Local fishermen also bring their daily catch of yellowfin tuna or mahi mahi.

A PLACE TO EXHALE
*Inside the Soulful Beauty of WIESERGUT

written Qamile Krasniqi

It takes just one step across the threshold of WIESERGUT to feel it: a softness in the air, a slowness in time.

Nestled in the alpine valley of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, WIESERGUT is a retreat sculpted with intention, where high-end design meets elemental peace, and where families, couples, and solitude-seekers find what they didn’t know they were missing.

We recently stayed at WIESERGUT with our two children during the lush, green stretch of summer. Rain accompanied nearly every day of our visit, but instead of dampening our mood, it deepened our experience. The rhythm of the falling rain became a gentle soundtrack to days spent indoors, allowing us to fully explore the hotel’s thoughtful interiors, to notice the textures of aged wood, the scent of handmade soap, the quiet joy of simply being still.

WIESERGUT calls itself „legere[r] Luxus im Hier und Jetzt“ – effortless luxury in the now – and it delivers on that promise with rare authenticity. Designed with a clear architectural vision by Gogl & Partner Architekten, the hotel is a composition of three distinct elements: the Gutshof, the Garden and Hideaway Suites, and the new Mountain Escape (including BergLoft, BergSuite, and BergGym). Each one echoes the same language of simplicity, light, and natural materials.

For families, the Garden Suites are a true discovery. Ours opened onto a private garden, a green refuge that, despite the rainy days, became a tranquil space to observe the misty landscape and let the children explore between showers. Inside, space unfolds over two levels under four-meter-high glass panels. The suite is filled with design pieces you won’t come across every day. Handblown lights, a freestanding bathtub with views of the sky, a fireplace made of raw steel, everything felt tactile and crafted.

The rain made the indoor spa offerings even more appealing. Spread across three levels, the BadHaus features saunas, a panoramic relaxation room, heated indoor and outdoor pools, and even a private rooftop spa with open-air bathtubs and fireplaces. Every treatment room is quiet and grounded.

Food at WIESERGUT is another expression of place. Most ingredients are sourced directly from the Kröll family’s farm: dairy, herbs, vegetables, and meat from their own Pinzgauer cattle. Breakfast—the „Glücksfrühstück“—is abundant and entirely personal. No buffet, everything is served fresh to your table or room, with new surprises each morning. One day, house-made wild berry jam and stone-milled Wiesern bread. The next, hand-rolled butter, soft cheese, and warm cakes. The ceramic tableware, crafted by Petra Lindenbauer, brings the same earthy clarity to the table that defines the architecture.

Guests gather in the Piazza courtyard, where the sculptural Feuerring becomes the heart of social life. Children swayed in hammocks while we sipped a glass of biodynamic rosé and watched the mist settle into the valley. What impressed us most, however, was the quiet consistency of quality. From the design of the light switches to the sound of the doors, everything is precisely as it should be. The philosophy is felt and seen, it is, above all, a place of calm.

For those seeking movement, the landscape delivers in every season. In summer, 400 kilometers of hiking paths start just outside the door. In winter, WIESERGUT offers direct ski-in/ski-out access to the Zwölferkogelbahn slopes. The new BergGym, accessible even on rainy days, offers Matrix training equipment and a refined aesthetic that mirrors the rest of the house. A private session or a yoga mat in your suite; the choice is always yours.

The Mountain Escape additions, the expansive BergLoft and intimate BergSuite, take privacy and architectural clarity to another level. Though we didn’t stay there this time, we toured them and immediately added them to our wishlist.

WIESERGUT is a rare place, it doesn’t ask for attention, it rather invites presence. Whether you arrive as a family, a couple, or on your own, you leave slower, lighter, and more connected to yourself. Rain or shine.

MALLORCAN WAKE-UP

*Finca Serena’s Hilltop Haven of Linen, Lemon & Lavender

The morning hits differently here. Daylight spills across your room, warm and golden, wrapping around linen-draped spaces like a whispered promise.

Lemon trees exhale their sharp sweetness, lavender fields hum with quiet energy, and a rooster calls out in the distance. Nature surrounds you completely, filling every breath with its presence.

Finca Serena rests in the heart of Plá de Mallorca, perched gracefully on a hillside surrounded by rolling fields and tranquil villages. The estate thrives as a seamless extension of its environment, with landscapes stretching endlessly into olive groves, pine forests, and Mediterranean gardens bathed in sunlight. The island radiates a vibrant energy, with its beaches, cliffs, and rugged mountains creating moments of wonder at every turn. Cycling through sunlit trails, exploring panoramic vistas, or simply surrendering to the quiet rhythms of the day, Mallorca offers an ever-evolving tapestry of experiences.

Architect Sergi Bastidas and designer Pilar Garcia-Nieto shaped the estate with a vision deeply rooted in the land. The transformation of the farmhouse evokes a sense of connection to the environment, with 25 individually designed rooms arranged across 40 hectares. Timber beams intersect whitewashed walls, and rustic stone tiles reflect the authenticity of Mallorca’s heritage. Every material and element feels intentional, from the linen-draped windows inviting sunlight to the textures of local craftsmanship that echo the natural surroundings.

The rooms flow with an effortless sense of calm, shaped by high, sloping ceilings and beams that create an open and airy design. Neutral taupe palettes and natural materials imbue the interiors with a tranquil harmony. The terraces and gardens embrace the landscape, offering secluded spaces framed by cypress trees and the soft rustle of leaves. The bathrooms emphasize space and simplicity, with solar-powered showers delivering the luxury of natural light and warmth. Handcrafted wooden accents and black steel details create an environment of understated elegance, where each moment is infused with a sense of mindfulness.

The Jacaranda restaurant provides a culinary experience deeply tied to the estate’s identity. Overlooking the pool, it presents farm-to-table dishes crafted from the freshest produce grown on-site in three thriving kitchen gardens. The menu brings together vibrant flavors inspired by Mallorca’s traditions, with every dish complemented by wines sourced from the island. As the evening unfolds, the setting transforms under the glow of moonlight, creating an unforgettable dining atmosphere.

The pace of life at Finca Serena invites its guests to embrace stillness and restoration. The Wellbeing Sanctuary offers a space to reconnect through yoga, meditation, and soothing treatments. The indoor pool and spa facilities immerse guests in an atmosphere of calm, while outdoor terraces provide spaces to bask in sunlight and quiet reflection. Privacy and serenity weave through every corner, shaping an experience designed to nurture body and mind.

WALDORF ASTORIA / Berlin

There’s luxury, and then there’s the Waldorf Astoria Berlin.
Waldorf Astoria Berlin defines a new rhythm in the city, where every detail is calibrated to immerse guests in a space where history, artistry, and energy converge.

Rising above the streets of Berlin, the building commands presence as a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture. It serves a destination and as a narrative, a celebration of Berlin’s creative pulse and its layered identity. This address exists as a cornerstone of culture, built within the historic Berlin Palace. The preserved facade speaks with authority, a testament to architectural brilliance that holds the weight of decades. Every entrance becomes an introduction, where light, scale, or structure combine to invite its guests to explore. Inside, the design offers an interplay of tactile elements and bold forms that transform spaces into experiences.

The grand entrance hall delivers an atmosphere of reverence. Marble flooring, gilded details, and textured surfaces guide the senses, creating a dialogue between past and present. Beyond the immediate impression, corridors and corners reveal curated artworks, sculptural lighting, and materials that extend the story of Berlin as a city in constant motion.

Within the rooms and suites, the design evolves into an environment for personal expression. Each space holds an intimacy that balances quiet comfort with bold aesthetics. Materials like polished wood, brushed metal, and soft textiles offer a dialogue between texture and light. The architecture frames the city in new ways, allowing Berlin’s character to enter the room through expansive windows. Furnishings sit with intent, each chosen to reflect a commitment to artistry and purpose.

Dining at the Waldorf Astoria Berlin takes guests deeper into an exploration of craftsmanship. The culinary approach celebrates flavors with clarity, where each ingredient is presented as an individual statement. The kitchen works with precision, creating dishes that resonate with both simplicity and depth. The dining spaces exist as a continuation of the hotel’s design language, blending architectural intent with an ambiance that inspires connection.

The spa extends the hotel’s philosophy into an experience of rejuvenation. Surrounded by thoughtful design, the spa becomes an escape into stillness. Textures, tones, and light create an environment where the focus shifts inward. Treatments are crafted to evoke presence, while the atmosphere supports a release of tension. The spa transforms time into something fluid, where moments stretch and invite reflection.

Each detail within the Waldorf Astoria Berlin contributes to a narrative of intentionality. The architecture anchors the space, while design, service, and atmosphere create an immersive environment. The location connects to Berlin’s vibrant energy, yet maintains a sense of retreat that feels wholly contained. Guests are invited into a story, where the city’s identity and the hotel’s vision merge seamlessly.

Elephant Hotel / Weimar

The Hotel Elephant Weimar is in the heart of the classic city and is one of the most historic and renowned hotels you can find in Germany.

The boutique hotel belongs to the Autograph Collection, with which Marriott offers exceptional, hand-picked hotels with a unique perspective in design, craftsmanship and hospitality under the premise "exactly like nothing else". No Autograph Collection Hotel resembles another. All hotels leave their own mark with a unique differentiator and story.

The Hotel Elephant Weimar is the house of history and has been a place of encounters for more than 300 years. As a hotspot and living room of the city, it inspires travellers from all over the world as well as locals from the city itself.

According to legend, the name of the house goes back to the Middle Ages: At that time, only a few people could read and write, so it was common to name hostels after animals and to attach corresponding symbols to the facade in a clearly visible way for orientation.

The unmistakable charm of the boutique hotel is characterized by timelessly elegant design and classic Art Deco and Bauhaus elements, which come into their own in the 99 comfortable rooms and suites or the public areas. In the lightroom, the heart of the hotel, the focus is on the hotel's own art collection.

Thes pillars of the house can be experienced: art, architecture, music, literature & design.
