Roomba Plus 515 Combo and the Upkeep of a Well-Designed Home
LE MILE
An ordinary vacuum disappears into a cupboard after use; a robot vacuum stays with the furniture, requiring a permanent place in the room. The iRobot Roomba Plus 515 Combo makes that arrangement particularly interesting because its work continues after the floor has been cleaned. The robot stands 8.35 centimetres high, allowing it to travel beneath beds and sofas where clearance permits. Its accompanying AutoWash Dock is a more substantial fixture, designed to empty dust, replenish water and clean the mop pads between sessions.
In a furnished home, rugs interrupt hard surfaces, chair legs narrow passages and skirting boards collect dirt along the edges, requiring a cleaner to adjust its approach as it moves. The 515 uses ClearView LiDAR to map its surroundings and detect obstacles, while an extending mop arm works towards corners. Its rotating pads mop hard flooring and lift by 10.5 millimetres when the robot detects carpet. It can cross thresholds up to 25 millimetres high, a useful consideration where adjoining rooms sit at different levels. A rubber-and-bristle brush and suction rated at up to 22,000 Pa handle loose debris.
The iRobot Roomba Plus 515 Combo with AutoWash Dock, bringing automated vacuuming and mopping into contemporary living spaces.
After mopping, much of the work usually passes back to the owner: pads need rinsing, collected dust emptied and fresh water made available before another cleaning cycle. The AutoWash Dock takes over those tasks, washing the pads at 75°C and drying them with 45°C air while managing dust collection and water refills. iRobot estimates up to three months of automatic dust collection and up to 40 days between water refills, depending on use. These intervals matter because they determine how often someone has to intervene once cleaning becomes part of a regular schedule.
Accommodating the dock requires thought, particularly in smaller interiors where storage and floor space are closely planned. Standing 48.5 centimetres high, with a footprint of 30 by 34 centimetres, it has a ribbed black housing and visible water tanks that must remain accessible. It needs a power connection and enough space for the robot to return without obstruction. Its restrained black finish works visually with the concrete and neutral surroundings pictured here, although the practical question of where it lives will be different in every home.
That routine can be scheduled through the Roomba Home app around working hours or the times when a room is frequently used, with voice control available as well. Its value lies in the repetition of ordinary tasks: crumbs beneath the dining table, dust under the sofa, dirt carried in from outside. The 515 is designed to deal with those traces and prepare its equipment for the next run. The trade-off for the owner is a permanent appliance in the room in exchange for potentially spending less time attending to the floors.
